DWPI On Dialog – Enhanced With New Manual Code Thesaurus Functionality
The Manual Code Index in DWPI on Dialog has been enhanced with new
Thesaurus functionality, providing details of the value-added information Thomson
Scientific creates for Manual Codes, including dates of coverage, titles, scope
notes, related items and key words.
The Thesaurus as been developed to make it easier for users to access complete
Manual Code information, as well as providing a direct guide to related terms
and key words for additional precision searching. For full details of the enhancements
see Dialog DWPI Manual Code Thesaurus.
IPC 8 Backfile Reclassification Now Released on Dialog, Questel.Orbit
and STN
During early 2007 the reloaded DWPI database on Dialog, Questel.Orbit
and STN started to be equipped with the IPC Reform reclassification data across
the backfile. The backfile reclassification is now complete on Questel.Orbit
and STN.
Historically, comprehensive retrieval backwards in time (backfiles) required you to search different IPC editions in force during those time periods. Now, the reformed classification system has been applied to the entire back file of patent documents held by the European Patent Office (comprising bibliographic data for nearly 54 million patent documents). This reclassified content forms the basis of the IPC data used in Thomson Scientific offerings. It enables users to employ Edition 8 of the IPC for comprehensive retrieval of patent information over the entire database.
Derwent World Patents Index® Enhancements
Released 2006 on Dialog and Questel•Orbit and STN
New value-added content
The enhanced DWPI delivers additional value-added content, including:
- Over 750,000 Documentation Abstracts available for the first time (covering the time period 1995-1999)
- Additional chemical structure indexing (Chemistry Resource) backfile
New original patent data
DWPI now contains selected 'first level' data, such as original patent titles and abstracts, full names of inventors and associated addresses, patent assignee addresses, and patent agent information. The database also includes coverage of USPTO national patent classifications.
New DWPI database record structure
To make this new and enhanced content easier for you to access and use, DWPI database records will now have a two-part structure.
- Invention Level — traditional DWPI content such as patent family, value-add title, abstract and indexing
- Member Patent Level — new additional data from each member (publication) listed in the invention (patent family) part of the record
What goes into the Invention Level?
The traditional DWPI family record makes up the Invention Level. Records are created by consistently collating and de-duplicating data from the individual member (publication) documents.
The Invention Level record comprises bibliographic data and value-add title, abstract, and indexing, including the newly-available Documentation Abstracts backfile. The majority of existing display formats and search options remain unchanged, to provide continuity for existing searchers.
What goes into the Member Patent Level?
The Member Patent Level contains more content new to DWPI, including original titles, abstracts, and main (1st) claim (where available). Additional valuable bibliographic data will also be available, comprising full inventor names and addresses, original assignee names and addresses, and attorney/agent names and addresses.
Original (initial) USPTO national classifications will be added to DWPI at the Member Patent Level.
Coverage varies by data element, patent kind (e.g. applications, granted patents, and utility models), and time:

Original (Initial) USPTO National Patent Classification
The enhanced DWPI now contains US national patent classifications. Main and secondary Original (Initial) USPTO classes, as issued on the US document at the time of publication, are included for US applications and granted patents from 1975 onwards (US-A, US-A1, US-B1, US-B2).
Future enhancements include updating of US national classes following the regular USPTO reclassification cycles. The current US national classes will then be available at both the Invention and Member Patent Levels.
Equivalent Abstracts
Thomson Scientific currently produces abstracts for the Basic or Equivalent-Treat-As-Basic family member. Between 1984 and 1997 abstracts were also prepared for many equivalent family members. This data is now included at the Member Patent Level. Where the equivalent abstract was in fact the Main or First Claim, this data has been moved to the new claims field (EP-B from 1984-09 to 1997-51 and US-A from 1996-01 to 1997-51).
