Twenty-Six Highly-Cited Danish Laureates Honored 
On May 24, 2005, Thomson Scientific honored the accomplishments of Danish researchers during a celebration held at the beautiful Moltkes Palace in Copenhagen. During the event, the most highly-cited Danish authors in a variety of fields where revealed and awarded Citation Laureate certificates in recognition of their accomplishments and influence on research worldwide.
 
The Event

Guest Speakers

Ms. Sally Curtis, director of sales for Europe, Middle East and Africa, moderated the day-long celebration. She welcomed the attendees and introduced the special quest speakers from Denmark and the presenters from Thomson Scientific. Ms. Curtis also provided an overview of the Thomson Corporation and the vision and mission of its scientific business unit. She concluded with a look at the Thomson Scientific information solutions.

 
The first guest speaker was Mr. Helge Sander, minister for science, technology and innovation. He thanked Thomson Scientific for recognizing the significant contributions that Danish researchers have had on research conducted around the globe, and specifically congratulated the event's honorees.
 
Mr. Sander explained that the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation was created in November 2001 as an extension of the former Ministry of Information Technology and Research. He further revealed that the objective of the Ministry is to promote the interaction of trade and industry, centers of research and education and to strengthen coordination in pursuance of industry and research policy.
 
Next to speak was Mr. Kim Oestrup, deputy director of IBM Denmark A/S and head of the DEF (Denmark's Electronic Library) Steering Committee. Mr. Oestrup provided a glimpse into the DEF vision that researchers, lecturers and students have access to all relevant information via user-friendly systems and high-quality guidance. He concluded by stating that all researchers and students working with information resources are thereby supported at the highest international level.
 
Trends in Danish Research

Following Mr. Oestrup, Ms. Nancy Bayers, manager of the Research Services Group at Thomson Scientific offered a look at trends in Danish Research. Ms. Bayers began by revealing the impressive fact that publication output in Denmark has seen a 100% increase over the last 25 years, compared to a world growth of only a 16 percent. (Data based on the Thomson 2004 National Indicators.) Ms. Bayers further explained that Denmark's citation impact showed an equally impressive increase of 60% over the same period.

Next, Ms. Jodi Bukowski gave a presentation entitled, "Uncovering Denmark's Citation Laureates." She began by describing the dawn of bibliometrics, whose foundation was laid when in 1955 Dr. Eugene Garfield published an article in Science introducing citation indexes as a new type of classification tool.
 
Ms. Bukowski then explained the methodology for identifying Denmark's citation laureates. To identify the citation laureates "we considered all articles and reviews published in the years 1990-2004 and authored or co-authored by a scientist currently working in Denmark (a total of 128,344 papers)," she explained. All citations to these papers were also considered (a total of 1,995,910 citations).
 

Each paper was then assigned a category based on the Thomson Scientific categorization of the journal in which the article was published. Within each category, the full list of indexed authors for each article was separated and citations to each article were counted, crediting each index author with the full tally of citations to that article. Citations were then summed by author name. The indexed names in each category were then ranked by the total number of citations across all articles.

The Laureates Revealed
Ms. Sally Curtis and Mr. Nicolas Espeche, key account manager at Thomson Scientific announced the 26 honorees and commented on the wide range of fields represented. Ms. Curtis remarked, "It is a great honor to be able to recognize the Danish researchers whose papers have been recognized by their colleagues worldwide."
