In celebration of their research community gaining access to ISI Web of Knowledge, Tec de Monterrey and Thomson Scientific held a day-long event, featuring supportive speeches and informative presentations.

The Event: Enhancing Scientific and Scholarly Research through the ISI Web of Knowledge
Held in the auditorium of ITESM-Monterrey's prestigious Graduate School of Administration and Business Management (known by its Spanish acronym as EGADE), the event was attended by more than 70 university officials, faculty, staff and students

Ing. Miguel Angel Arreola, Director, Main Library, ITESM-Monterrey opened the day with welcoming remarks and words of appreciation to the Thomson Scientific staff. Ing. Arreola discussed the growth of ITESM-Monterrey's Main Library over the past twenty years, as well as initiatives currently being undertaken such as IS0 9001 certification to ensure the Library's continued growth. He remarked how Thomson is the world leader in scientific information publishing, and also explained the important role the ISI Web of Knowledge platform will play in advancing the quality of research conducted at Tec de Monterrey, propelling the university to become a major contributor to the invaluable research being conducted around the globe. Toward the end of his remarks, Ing. Arreola recognized the presence at the event of Dr. Francisco Cantú, Director of Posgraduate Research, ITESM-Monterrey. Dr. Cantú is a leader in ITESM-Monterrey's research community and a key supporter of ITESM's research activities.

After greeting the university officials and attendees, and thanking them for there support of Thomson Scientific, Amy Hueber, vice president for Europe, Middle East and Africa at Thomson Scientific delivered a presentation entitled "Thomson ISI: Linking Scientific and Scholarly Research in the 21st Century." Her talk provided an overview of the company's tradition of excellence and long-standing reputation for providing the global research community with the highest-quality products and services. "ISI® (acquired by The Thomson Corporation in 1992) has been the leading secondary publisher, focusing on multidisciplinary scholarly journal literature for over 40 years and produces some of the most heavily used, unique research tools in the industry," explained Hueber.

The presentation continued with an overview of the markets that Thomson Scientific serves, reaching nearly eight million researchers worldwide. Hueber also explained the composition of The Thomson Corporation (www.thomson.com). "Thomson Scientific is a business of The Thomson Corporation, and its products assist professionals at every stage of research and development - from discovery to analysis to product development and distribution," said Hueber.

Her presentation concluded with a look into the Thomson Scientific product offerings, and explaining that there are more than 200 site-wide Web customers in Latin America and more than 2,200 institutions that subscribe to Web of Science worldwide. Hueber also re-affirmed the Thomson Scientific commitment to its Latin American customers, as well as the company's support for ITESM 2015, a set of strategic goals to be complied by the ITESM system by 2015. She mentioned that ITESM-Monterrey's investment in ISI Web of Knowledge would draw the campus closer to fulfilling those goals.

Next, Jeff Clovis, director of Global Sales Support at Thomson Scientific, delivered his presentation entitled "ISI Web of Knowledge: The Researchers Path to Smart Discovery." He began by discussing scientific trends in Mexico, revealing that between 1981 and 2003 the total output of published scholarly papers rose from just over 5,000 to more than 25,000. He also pointed out that the impact of these published works also increased from an Impact Factor of approximately 1.75 to just over 2.5.

Clovis then provided an overview of ISI Web of Knowledge. ISI Web of Knowledge content is anchored by the Thomson Scientific core journal and patent literature and bibliographic management tools, which is complemented by carefully selected partner content to provide "deep, diverse coverage of published research and technology", explained Clovis.

He concluded by giving in-depth examples of each of the components with the ISI Web of Knowledge platform, highlighting the unique Web of Science feature, Cited Reference Searching - which allows users to navigate forward, backward, and through the multidisciplinary literature to uncover all the information relevant to their work. He also emphasized the new Century of Science initiative, which adds approximately 850,000 articles from more than 200 carefully-selected journals from the published research of the first half (1900-1944) of the 20th century to Web of Science. He demonstrated the importance of this collection of retrospective works by detailing an example of a paper that was first published in 1936 and has been cited more frequently in the past three years than at any time since its publication - a clear indication of its impact on the research being conducted today.

Lic. Guadalupe Jimenez, regional manager for Mexico and Central America at Thomson Scientific, followed with an in-depth description of three key components of ISI Web of Knowledge: Web of Science, Current Contents Connect (CC Connect ®) and Journal Citation Reports on the Web (JCR Web ® ). First, Lic. Jimenez explained that Web of Science enables users to search current and retrospective multidisciplinary information from nearly 8,700 of the world’s most influential research journals. She detailed the Web of Science powerful search capabilities, which enable users to instantly find the most relevant information to their research, and the new Analyze Tool that allows users to analyze and refine results by author, publication year, journal subject category, institution, and language or source title. She also explained cited reference searching—the unique Web of Science feature that allows users to take a seminal idea, research its origins, and discovering its impact over time.

Next, Lic. Jimenez focused on Current Contents Connect—the multidisciplinary current awareness resource that provides access to complete table of contents, and bibliographic information from nearly 8,000 leading scholarly journals and more than 2,000 books and proceedings published worldwide. Specifically, she detailed the Current Contents eSearch and eFirst technology. Current Contents eSearch applies advanced search criteria to mine the content of pre-evaluated and selected Web sites. “Current Contents eSearch extracts the relevant documents within each site to deliver essential information about preprints, funding and grants, and other research activities (proceedings, dissertations, meeting abstracts, and reviews of scholarly Web sites),” she explained.

Lic. Jimenez went on to explain that eFirst significantly enhances the value of CC Connect by providing access to the bibliographic information from peer reviewed journal articles in electronic form before the complete journal issue is published. “eFirst offers the author and user communities the advantage of a shortened publishing cycle, and benefits publishers by helping them to differentiate between their electronic and print products,” she said.

She concluded her talk with a presentation on Journal Citation Reports ® on the Web (JCR Web ® ). Available in science and the social science editions and collectively covering approximately 7,000 journals within 200 disciplines, the statistical data in JCR Web provides a systematic and objective way to determine journals with the highest impact within a given subject area, concluded Lic. Jimenez .

Jeff Clovis concluded the lectures with a presentation entitled "Essential Science Indicators: An Analytical Look at the Scientific Landscape". He began by discussing ISI Web of Knowledge stating that the goal is to enhance the entire research process by allowing both novice and expert users to quickly locate the essential, relevant information they need, when the need it, directly from the desktop. As an integral part of ISI Web of Knowledge, Clovis also explained that ISI Essential Science Indicators is an evaluation tool that helps researchers, administrators, deans, and directors measure the productivity, influence, and impact of worldwide research activity in 22 fields of science and the social sciences.

Following a brief question and answer session facilitated by a panel of both Thomson Scientific representative and Main Library officials, Thomson Scientific awarded ITESM-Monterrey with a plaque in commemoration of their dedication to scientific and scholarly research. The plaque was accepted on behalf of the University by Ing. Edith Salazar, MLIS, Acquisitions and Knowledge Manager, ITESM-Monterrey.

The presentation of the plaque was followed by a catered lunch hosted by Thomson Scientific. After the lunch, attendees were given valuable product training sessions by Nicole Urquhart, trainer at Thomson Scientific, concluding the day-long event.

Thomson Scientific staff and key University officials capped off the day with a celebratory dinner at the Hotel Quinta Real in nearby Garza García, a suburb of Monterrey.
