INSTITUTO TECNOLOGICO DE MONTERREY CELEBRATES PURCHASE OF WEB OF SCIENCE AND CURRENT CONTENTS CONNECT

Mexico City, Mexico May 28, 2003—Today, Thomson ISI and the Instituto Tecnológico de Monterrey, Campus Ciudad de México (ITESM-CCM) celebrated the ITESM-CCM purchase of Web of Science® and Current Contents Connect® (CC Connect®). As a key component of ISI Web of KnowledgeSM—the Web-based environment that offers seamless navigation to the highest quality content, evaluation tools, and bibliographic management products—Web of Science indexes approximately 8,500 of the world’s most influential scholarly journals, providing users with complete bibliographic data, searchable author abstracts, and cited references from content back to 1945. Also vitally important, CC Connect is the premier current awareness product, covering 8,000 scholarly journals and more than 2000 books and proceedings literature.

The ITESM System, Research Activities, and ITESM-CCM

The Instituto Tecnológico de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey (ITESM), commonly known as Tec de Monterrey, was founded in 1943 by a group of entrepreneurs headed by Don Eugenio Garza Sada. Seeking to educate professionals and equip them with the skills needed to succeed in the business world, Tec de Monterrey has developed into an institution recognized, nationally and internationally, for its academic excellence. For more information on the ITESM system, visit http://www.itesm.mx.

With respect to research, the ITESM systems' research centers focus primarily on four areas of research: innovation, technological development and competitiveness; sustainable development planning; preservation of the environment; and improvement of education. By 2005, ITESM hopes to augment and consolidate the research efforts of its campuses, with continued focus on these four key areas. For more information on ITESM's research efforts, visit http://www.tecdemonterrey.edu.mx/sistema/cinves.html

Celebrating in 2003 the 30th Anniversary of its founding, ITESM-CCM is the first of the ITESM campuses to purchase Thomson ISI products. For more information on ITESM-CCM, visit http://ccm.itesm.mx.

Opening Remarks

Dr. Macario Schettino, Dean, ITESM-CCM and Mtra. Brenda Villareal Antelo, Library Director, ITESM-CCM made the opening remarks to the attendees assembled at the Hotel Radisson. Their remarks were followed by the presentation of Keith MacGregor, Senior Vice President, The Americas, Europe, Middle East, & Africa, Thomson ISI.

Mr. MacGregor’s presentation entitled Thomson ISI: Linking Scientific and Scholarly Research in the 21st Century provided a historic overview of Thomson ISI including its long-standing reputation for high quality products and services along with its commitment to serving the unique needs of the diverse markets served.

Next Jeff Dougherty, Manager, Global Product Support, Thomson Scientific gave a presentation entitled The ISI Web of Knowledge: A Premiere Platform for Scientific and Scholarly Research. Emphasizing key elements of ISI Web of Knowledge, such as High-Quality Content (consisting of Thomson ISI & Thomson Derwent core content, complemented by carefully selected partner content), Integration (a dynamic, Web-based platform integrating content with tools to access, analyze, and manage research information), and Ease-Of-Use (with new technologies to integrate, extend, and organize the research environment), Mr. Dougherty went on to state that the goal of ISI Web of Knowledge is to enhance the entire research process by allowing both novice and expert users to quickly locate the essential, relevant information they need—exactly when they require it, 24 hours a day—directly from the desktop.

After a brief break, Guadalupe Jimenez, Regional Manager for Mexico and Central America, presented three key components of ISI Web of Knowledge: Web of Science, Current Contents Connect and Journal Citation Reports® on the Web (JCR Web®). Ms. Jimenez explained that Web of Science enables users to search current and retrospective multidisciplinary information from nearly 8,500 of the world’s most influential research journals. She also detailed the powerful search capabilities of Web of Science that allow users to quickly find the most relevant information to their research. Later, Ms. Jimenez explained cited reference searching—the unique Web of Science feature that allows users to navigate through an era, taking a seminal idea, researching its origins, and discovering its impact over time.

Next, Ms. Jimenez focused on Current Contents Connect—the multidisciplinary current awareness resource that provides access to complete table of contents, and bibliographic information from the world’s leading scholarly journals and more than 2,000 books and proceedings. Additionally, the Current Contents eSearch technology that applies advanced search criteria to mine the content of pre-evaluated and selected Web sites was also highlighted. Current Contents eSearch extracts the relevant documents within each site to deliver essential information about preprints, funding and grants, and other research activities (proceedings, dissertations, meeting abstracts, and reviews of scholarly Web sites) explained Jimenez.

Ms. Jimenez presented JCR Web—the unique, multidisciplinary tool that can be used for a broad range of applications by a variety of information professionals. The statistical data in JCR Web provides a systematic and objective way to evaluate journals with the highest scholarly impact within 200 disciplines. JCR Web is available in two editions—the Science Edition covers approximately 5,700 leading international science journals, while the Social Sciences Edition covers about 1,700 journals.

Jeff Dougherty wrapped up the presentations with ISI Essential Science Indicators: An analytical look at the Scientific Landscape. ISI Essential Science IndicatorsSM is a tool that helps researchers, administrators, deans, and directors measure the productivity, influence, and impact of worldwide research activity in 22 fields of science and social science. ISI Essential Science Indicators is a Web based resource, enabling researchers to conduct ongoing, quantitative analyses of research performance and track trends in science. Covering a multidisciplinary selection of journals from around the world, this in-depth analytical tool offers data for ranking scientists, institutions, countries, and journals, providing researchers with a unique and comprehensive compilation of performance statistics and science trends data.

The event culminated in Keith MacGregor presenting Dr. Macario Schettino with a plaque in recognition of ITESM-CCM's commitment to scientific and scholarly research in Mexico.

The festivities concluded with a celebratory dinner at the Restaurante Bar Antigua Hacienda del Tlalpan where ITESM officials and staff joined the Thomson ISI staff in celebrating the success of the event.
