ISILinks

Q: Is Thomson Scientific OpenURL compliant?

A: Yes and you may contact either your local Customer Technical Support desk or the Links group ts.isilinks@thomson.com directly to have an OpenURL link set up for your institution

Q: What options are available for full text links?

A: Thomson Scientific provides full text for records found in Web of Knowledge products via three methods:

1. Direct publisher, aggregator, and DOI links to full text
2. OpenURL
3. OPAC

These options can be used in conjunction or independently of each other.

Q: What aggregators are available through Web of Knowledge products?

A: The aggregators EBSCO Host, Swets, Ingenta/Catchword, and JSTOR can be linked to via Web of Knowledge products. For EBSCO Host, we provide links to titles in the EBSCO Host Electronic Journal Service (EJS). As noted on the EBSCO Host Electronic Journal Service website, EJS is a gateway to electronic journals and "consolidates over 8,000 e-journals from all major publishers, covering practically all disciplines." However, we do not provide full text links for EBSCO Publishing Titles such as Academic Search Premier.

Q: Is it possible to have full-text links to JSTOR titles?

A: It is possible to have full text links to JSTOR titles from the entire JSTOR collection or from select JSTOR collections. To request links to JSTOR collections be enabled in Web of Knowledge products please email ts.isilinks@thomson.com with the JSTOR collections to which your institution subscribes.

Q: What is the benefit of having publisher/aggregator links to full text and OpenURL?

A: Publisher or aggregator links to full text allows the end-user to have one-click access to the full text of the respective article. With Open URL, there are more steps involved in getting to the full text. Open URL is more beneficial for electronic resource administrators due to the ability to update full text links in one location.

Q:

Is it possible to link via DOI?

A: Thomson Scientific provides links via Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs) received from CrossRef to full text within Web of Knowledge products. When creating publisher links for an institution, DOI links are also enabled. DOIs are linked based on publisher, ISSN and/or journal title provided. If DOIs are not available for the publisher only the direct publisher links will be created.

Q: What version of OpenURL does Thomson Scientific support, and what Service ID (SID) is used?

A: As part of our quarterly upgrades to ISI Web of Knowledge, in the beginning of 2006 Thomson Scientific upgraded to OpenURL version 1.0, the newest standard. Please note that OpenURL version 0.1 will no longer be supported.

The way the Session ID (SID) is presented has also changed. Previously, the SID was always "ISI:WOK". With the upgrade, the new SID will be constructed as follows: rfr_id=info:sid/www.isinet.com:WoK:PRODUCT_NAME , which includes a database-specific abbreviation, such as WOS for Web of Science or CCC for Current Contents Connect. This will provide more explicit data on which product generated the source OpenURL.

You will not need to do anything to your ISI Web of Knowledge account to take advantage of this upgrade. The same base URL will be used and appended with the new version. Innovative WebBridge users may need to change their settings in WebBridge for the new SID, adding the product abbreviation to the SID for the products they subscribe to; e.g. "ISI:WOK:WOS" or "ISI:WOK:CCC".

Q: What journals are available as full text in Web of Knowledge?

A: A complete list of journals can be accessed here, and a complete list of publishers can be accessed here.

Q: What information do I need to provide to get an OpenURL link set up in Thomson Scientific products?

A: You should provide the following information: the base URL for your OpenURL server and if you want a custom button, the gif URL of the image which would be stored on your own server. If you do not have a custom image, the link will be set up with a generic button which says "Links".

Q: When I attempt to link to a title, I am prompted to enter a password or pay for the full text.  Why does this happen?

A: To access the full text of an article the institution must have an agreement with the publisher and/or aggregator to access the full text. First, it should be noted that journals can be accessed by a variety of vendors (the publisher or an aggregator like EBSCO). If a librarian has verified that the institution has a subscription to the journal title, then there is a possibility that the links have been configured in such a way that the title is being accessed by a different provider. When links to full text are configured for an institution’s subscription by Thomson Scientific it is important that the holdings list provided has the ISSN and journal title with the correct vendor. If the link is set up with an incorrect publisher or aggregator, this could result in the patron being prompted to login and/or pay for access to full text.

Q: What are the OpenURL metadata elements that are supported by Thomson Scientific?

A: The Open URL metadata set consists of the following elements: ISSN, ISBN, Publication Year, Volume, Journal Title, Issue, Starting Page Number, Ending Page Number, Article Number, Authors (up to 5), Article Title, and Book Title

Q: How can I setup my OPAC/Holdings links in the Thomson Scientific products?

A:

  • These can be requested through the Links department ts.isilinks@thomson.com
  • You must provide the link gateway URL for your OPAC utility. If using an INNOPAC server, it may look something like: http://machinename.schoolname.edu/search/i?SEARCH=
  • The link can use an ISSN or Journal Title search. The ISSN or Journal Title can appear anywhere in the URL string.
  • You can provide an OPAC name of up to 20 characters, which will show up in the drop down on the abstract page. If no specific name is provided, 'Holdings' will be used

Q: What is the number of Holdings per customer site that are supported?

A: With the release of Web of Knowledge 3.0, up to 8 Holdings links are supported in Web of Science and Journal Citation Reports. The additional links will be supported in other Web of Knowledge products as they are upgraded.

There is a prescribed file format for providing links setup information. This is a an Excel spreadsheet or text file, including ISSN, journal title, publisher or aggregator, and if there are any date restrictions for access such as start date and/or end date of access.

Q: Can these links be turned on during product trials?
