THOMSON HONOURS LEADING INDIAN SCIENTISTS
Bangalore, India - 27 July 2006 — Thomson Scientific today announced the top five research professors in India who are recipients of the ‘Thomson Citation Laureate Award’—an honour bestowed in recognition for their groundbreaking and influential contribution to, and accomplishments in, research and development (R&D) worldwide.

The outstanding Citation Laureate Award winners are Professor Kalyanmoy Deb, Indian Institute of Technology, Uttar Pradesh (Computer Science); Professor Gautam R Desiraju, University of Hyberabad, Andhra Pradesh (Chemistry); Professor Ashok Pandey, Biotech Research Society of India, Kerala, (Biology & Biochemistry); Professor Chintamani Nagesa Ramachandra Rao, Jawaharlal Nehru Centre of Advance Scientific Research, Karanataka (Materials Science) and Professor Ashoke Sen, Harish Chandra Research Institute, Uttar Pradesh (Physics). The Awards are bestowed upon the authors of the most highly-cited research papers within a specific industry category in India between 1996-2005. This measures the effectiveness of a research paper and the impact of the individual research.
These Awards reflect the growing influence that Indian R&D specialists are having upon the global R&D community. With its highly educated workforce, India is increasingly recognized for its innovation—a fact reflected by the growing number of Indian research papers written and worldwide citations to Indian research. From 1996 to 2000, the number of research papers written was 75,923 compared to 98,558 for the period 2001-2005, and citations rose from 113,824 during 1996-2000 to 221,563 during 2001-2005.
According to Thomson Scientific, the Award’s organizer and part of The Thomson Corporation, India has the third highest rate of increase in total citations in the world, after China and South Korea , for countries having more than 100,000 citations during the period 2001-2005.
The five scientific fields where India scores highest against the world average are Chemistry, Physics, Engineering, Computer Science and Materials Science.
The Awards, part of the Thomson India Research Day activity, were presented by Thomson Scientific’s Executive Vice President, Keith MacGregor, and guest speaker Professor Sadagopan, Director of International Institute of Information Technology during an evening ceremony held at the Taj Residence in Bangalore. The event was attended by more than 120 of the winners’ industry peers from leading research institutions and libraries. As well as India , the Thomson Citation Laureate Awards are also presented globally in countries such as Australia , Denmark , Brazil and Mexico .
